Report on Participation in the 109th Meeting of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES2025)

From May 9 to 11, 2025, I participated in the 109th Meeting of the Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES2025) held in Sapporo. As Japan’s largest academic conference in the field of endoscopy, this meeting brings together the latest knowledge and technological advances. This year marked the first time in 19 years that the conference was held in Hokkaido, attracting a large number of participants from across the country and resulting in a very successful and lively event. The special and educational lectures held in the main hall were particularly well attended. In the educational lecture titled “Endoscopic Innovations in the Treatment of GERD,” delivered by Professor Haruhiro Inoue, the audience’s enthusiasm was evident through active note-taking and a lively Q&A session.

Professors Noboru Yokoyama, Naoyuki Urakami, and Dr. Mayo Tanabe served as moderators in various oral presentation sessions, all of which featured highly engaging and spirited discussions.

The main theme of the conference was “Passion, Ambition, and Dreams.” It included special sessions and hands-on training opportunities aimed at young physicians. I had the privilege of presenting in the “President’s Special Session for Award-Winning Presentations by Branch Representatives,” where I delivered a talk entitled “Endoscopic Papillectomy for the Complete Resection of a Pedunculated Intra-Ampullary Papillary-Tubular Neoplasm Confined Within a Choledochocele.” The case was one I experienced at Aizu Chuo Hospital during an off-campus rotation last year. I had previously presented this case under the title “A Case of Endoscopic Papillectomy for a Biliary Papillary Tumor with Challenging Diagnostic Assessment” at the 113th JGES Shikoku Branch Meeting, where it received an Outstanding Presentation Award. With guidance from Dr. Ushio and other mentors, I refined the presentation into an English format for this national stage. Although I was nervous as it was my first presentation in English, the careful preparation and support I received allowed me to present with confidence—and I was deeply honored to receive the Best Presentation Award in this prestigious session.

In addition, Dr. Daijiro Shiomi and I teamed up to participate in the “Endoscopy Operation Competition for Residents and Young Doctors” using the next-generation simulator MIKOTO. Although it was our first time using this simulator and we were unable to advance to the final round, we achieved a relatively high score. Top-performing institutions were found to regularly practice colonoscope insertion using the MIKOTO simulator. Observers at the event commented on the simulator’s high educational value, and I strongly feel that our institution should consider introducing the colon model to better prepare for future competitions.

On the evening of the first day, a general networking event was held at Hokkaido Ballpark “ES CON FIELD,” where we enjoyed watching baseball while networking with physicians from all over Japan. Toward the end of the event, participants gathered in front of the mural of Yu Darvish and Shohei Ohtani—both former players for the Nippon Ham Fighters—for commemorative photos, creating a warm and relaxed atmosphere.

The many inspiring presentations, not only from our own department but also from other institutions, left a strong impression on me. This experience reaffirmed my desire to continue actively participating in both domestic and international conferences and to contribute to clinical practice and research. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for this valuable opportunity. I also deeply appreciate the support of my colleagues who covered clinical duties during the conference period.
